Edwin Lachapelle, Manager, Operations

Edwin began working as a Barista at Reconnect’s Brooklyn Café as a teenager. As Manager of Operations, Edwin now works across every social enterprise offering various support. As a young person, Edwin grew up in a tough neighborhood and he faced many of the same challenges our Reconnect youth face: Over-policing in his community, the negative effects of racism and stereotypical thinking, the lack of choices and opportunities to advance. Being largely built and having prominent tattoos, Edwin was often targeted by the police and felt that he was unfairly treated, as were many of his peers on the block. He was fortunate to find Reconnect, and to have the opportunity to join the staff once he completed the program. His day to day work with the young men is the most important and rewarding part of his work.

Edwin’s ongoing passion for physical fitness has him on a path to becoming an amateur boxer and to eventually grow and open his own gym as a licensed trainer. In addition to his work at Reconnect, he also is a coach and mentor to younger athletes. Because of Reconnect, Edwin changed his point of view: He used to think he was a product of his environment, now he knows the positive environment he is in is a product of him.
